How Dates Fruits Can Improve Athletic Performance

Dates fruits are rich in iron, potassium, calcium and magnesium and are an important source of fiber.

The dates is the fruit obtained from the Phoenix palm species, mainly the Phoenix dactylifera species , popularly known as the date palm, and distributed from the Canary Islands, through North Africa and South Asia, to the Far East.

The date palm can grow in hot and arid climates, even tolerating salt water, indicates the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). These qualities allow its cultivation in extreme environmental conditions, as in the case of deserts.

Types of Dates Fruits

The popularity of dates goes back a long way. Its origin is attributed to North Africa and Asia, although historians have not reached a consensus. It is a highly regarded fruit among the Arabs, Greeks, Hebrews and Egyptians for its nutritional properties.

In fact, according to the Spanish Nutrition Foundation ( FEN ), they referred to the palm tree as “the tree of life”, because they believed that they could survive long trips through the desert with a handful of dates.

Among the most commercialized, is the Tunisian date Deglet Noor, known as the “date of light” , with smooth and shiny skin, considered the best of all.

There is also the Medjool date, with wrinkled skin and a texture similar to that of a toffee caramel . In our country, this fruit has an outstanding production in Elche.

Also, dates fruits are a good source of carbohydrates. They provide a lot of energy to the body and are an ideal food to endure long trips , for practicing sports or to better cope with work that requires a lot of physical wear, continues the FEN. Therefore, they are a highly coveted food for athletes.
